Last month I was working on an outdoor health event and looking to promote chefs that focus on organic, local and sustainable ingredients.  Food writer, Carolyn Jung of Food Gal, recommended me this unique restaurant.  It was right in my own backyard.
Gather Restaurant in Berkeley offers comfortable surroundings and a menu designed to fit the casual diner.¬†It’s a place where you can find seasonal food, carefully sourced and thoughtfully prepared to appeal equally to vegetarians and omnivores.
Their motto is ‚ÄúFlavorful, Approachable, and Mindful.” I was very impressed with the ingredients and the menu.¬†¬†I ordered two appetizers —¬†the vegan Charcuterie and the Grilled Squid — with the Spicy Young BBQ Chicken for Entree.¬†¬†The vegan appetizer was superb and the squid was tender and perfectly grilled.¬†¬†The BBQ Chicken was tender, juicy and the BBQ sauce did not overpower the chicken, as it¬†often does with this dish. ¬†We ordered the Blueberry Baked Custard dessert which was delicious and light. ¬†The three items and a dessert were plenty for two people to share.¬†¬†The price was reasonable for organic food, nothing beyond $19.
It is so important nowadays to eat consciously with eyes wide open and know where my food is coming from, and I like supporting businesses such as local farmers, ‚Äúgreen‚ÄĚ restaurants and purveyors and local hiring. Planting the seeds of healthy eating for children and re-educating adults to eat healthy and locally is also important.
Gather Restaurant ‚Äúsupports local food producers and¬†researches all of their ingredients carefully, with an unwavering commitment to choosing foods that are cultivated safely, justly and sustainably. They make certain that the farmers and their workers who bring us the gifts of each harvest are fairly compensated. They go beyond organic. ¬†They value respect for the farmers, food, the earth and our bodies.‚ÄĚ
It’s always possible¬†to enjoyably eat organic and sustainable, if we are just willing to do our research!¬† I highly recommend Gather Restaurant for the next healthy and mindful dining and hang out. ¬†It is truly 360 degrees of ‘green and sustainable‚Äô, from the food to the furniture, and the David Brower Center building where it is located.
