Each Chilipepper ™ newsletter now features a “green” organization that contributes to a clean, healthy environment in the Bay Area.

The Rising Sun Energy Center has a money-saving program that is FREE to use. This summer program also supports our area youth by teaching and training them for careers that contribute to society. Here are the details:

Rising Sun Energy Center: California Youth Energy Services Program

Interested in saving money? The California Youth Energy Services (CYES) Program is here to help! CYES is a summer program of the non-profit organization – Rising Sun Energy Center that provides FREE Green House Calls to residents to help them save money on their energy and water bills, and assists them in improving the environment!

The program provides youth (15-22 years old) with meaningful, transferable skills by providing them with prestigious, professional green workforce development training and employing them as Certified Energy Specialists. Youth are accompanied by a legal adult while they are performing Green House Calls and all of their work is subject to random third party verification for quality assurance purposes.

A Green House Call consists of a basic energy and water assessment and FREE installation of basic upgrades to residents, as well as FREE energy and water conservation education with direction to learn more about various rebates and incentives available to help residents save money on their utility bills. The FREE basic upgrades that are provided to residents are: ALL new CFL light bulbs in exchange for their old incandescent bulbs, new low-flow shower heads with multiple stream modes (water-flow comes out at the same pressure as old shower head, but uses less water because of inclusion of air), water meter and water pressure readings, ALL free kitchen and bathroom sink aerators, an attic insulation assessment and an additional free gift of a either a clothesline or a power strip.

CYES also prides itself in hosting FREE Torchiere Swap Events. energy. The brand new lamps are provided for FREE and are a $150 dollar value, and residents may trade ALL of their old lamps for new ones.

Sounds too good to be true? California Youth Energy Services are FREE, no catch! The program is made possible through funding from PG&E, under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission; local municipalities and water districts.
